Bishops ‘horrified’ at intimidation tactics in South African strike

The Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference says it was horrified at the intimidation of doctors and teachers by striking protesters and at the neglect of patients and pupils during an intensifying public-sector strike.

Water, water, everywhere... Relentlessly, the Rio Solimões snakes its way through northwest Brazil, from the Peruvian frontier until it merges with the Rio Negro, close to Manaus. From this point the river is definitively named the Amazon – a river with many names that has produced a quite unique wetland region, ringed by luxuriant tropical rainforest. In several places the river is miles wide, featuring many interwoven streams and vast lakes.

This year, Melbourne is hosting the 63rd Annual UN DPI/NGO Conference, titled “Advance Global Health – Achieve the MDGs”. The conference will be held from Monday, 30 August , to Wednesday, 1 September , 2010. The Conference is being organized in partnership between the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI), the NGO/DPI Executive Committee and the Government of Australia.

Here, and throughout Central and Eastern Europe, Catholics suffered through 50 years of Nazi and Soviet murder regimes. So they know the real cost of Christian witness from bitter experience -- and also, unfortunately, the cost of cowardice, collaboration and self-delusion in the face of evil.
